Swedish and Danish cement industry pioneer

H.W. Carlsen’s History

H.W.Carlsen started as a Swedish company specializing in designing and supplying equipment for pneumatic loading and unloading ships and barges and is now a business brand of Lion Bulk Handling.

Our company, a Swedish and Danish cement industry pioneer, traces its origins back to the 40’s when Mr. Helmut Willem Carlsen began his journey with FLSmidth. By the 50s, Mr. Carlsen was already making significant strides in pneumatic cement handling, focusing on bulk trucks and railcar unloading under the banner of Interconsult.
At the beginning of the 1960s, this technology was also adapted to ships, several barges, and coasters, which were converted into special cement carriers.

In 1966, the company H.W.Carlsen AB was formed and separated from Interconsult to further develop the technique in this new field of pneumatic cement unloading from ships and barges.
Since then, unnumerable ships and barges worldwide have been converted into self-discharging cement carriers with various types of Carlsen-designed loading and unloading systems for dry bulk materials.

Over the years, H.W.Carlsen has demonstrated its adaptability and resilience through strategic ownership changes. In 1992, the shares of H.W.Carlsen AB were acquired by FLSmidth Fuller Engineering Group, making H.W.Carlsen a sister company to Fuller Kovako B.V. in the Netherlands. In 2004, FLSmidth sold the company to a Swedish investment company, which relocated the company’s main office to the Netherlands. In 2016, the company was acquired by its current owner, Lion Bulk Handling (Lion Marine Group B.V.). In September 2018, H.W.Carlsen and Kovako were reunited under the Lion banner, with Lion becoming the representative of Kovako Ship Unloaders.

The Combined efforts of H.W. Carlsen, Kovako, and the other Lion Bulk Handling brands (Kintec, Ruyter Offshore, and Bulk Academy) have resulted in a highly experienced engineering group with a focus on maritime, offshore, and portside bulk handling.
